Bring on the Cucs

Although I am without a camera, as Charmaine is still in San Diego, I thought I’d post a quick update about the latest harvest. The corn may be down, but the rest of the garden is picking up steam.

Today I was forced to pick:
2 Cucumbers (I’m eating one like an apple right now)
2 Zucchini (total is now 13)
3 Yellow Squash (total is now 18)

  1. Hi James,

Bummer about the corn! Cool blog, though. Tell me – do you know much about “flower-end rot” on tomatoes? I think there’s a deficiency in my soil, but I can’t remember what to add & wondered if you knew. Calcium/lime? Looking forward to your next post!

    Cheers,
    Jenn

  2. I’m not a tomato expert, so I can only tell you what I did when my tomatoes were turning brown and/or black on the bottom and growing sort of flat there. I read all about “blossom end rot” on various gardening sites. Most everyone agrees that it’s caused by lack of calcium. Several people suggested checking the acidity of the soil, adding lime, spraying the plants with calcium chloride, etc.

I was way too lazy to do any of that, so I followed a simple suggestion from someone else… to make sure the tomatoes were getting enough water. That did the trick. I didn’t need any fancy soil tests or additives, I just had to adjust my watering schedule and make sure the plants were getting enough water on a regular basis.

    Hope that helps.
