It doesn&#8217;t look like it will get any taller, though, as it has finally grown tassels.  This is exciting news, since it means the first ears of corn will start growing soon.<\/p>\n<p><a href='http:\/\/www.jtalbot.com\/garden\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/img_5118.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jtalbot.com\/garden\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/img_5118-390x520.jpg\" alt=\"Charmaine and the Corn\" title=\"Charmaine and the Corn\" width=\"390\" height=\"520\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In other news, we finally broke down and spread some fertilizer around the garden tonight.  I guess this means we can&#8217;t say our garden is organic anymore, but at least we haven&#8217;t used any chemicals for killing weeds or bugs.  I just hope we can stay ahead of the squash bugs.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve decided to keep a tally of things we&#8217;ve harvested.  I&#8217;m not sure how often I&#8217;ll update the blog with the current tally, but it will be interesting to see how things measure up next year.  Here&#8217;s the current tally:<\/p>\n<p>Radishes &#8211; 20 (I didn&#8217;t keep an exact count, but they&#8217;re done for the year)<br \/>\nYellow Squash &#8211; 8 (4 were sampled by magpies)<br \/>\nZucchini &#8211; 8 (1 was sampled by magpies)<br \/>\nTurnips &#8211; 3 (I&#8217;m only counting the really big ones)<br \/>\nBell Peppers &#8211; 3<br \/>\nRed Peppers &#8211; 2<br \/>\nBeet Greens &#8211; 1 bowl<br \/>\nBlackberry &#8211; 2 berries (so good)<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, if you&#8217;re wondering how the yellow squash caught up to the zucchini so quickly, we have 6 yellow squash plants and only 3 zucchini plants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our corn has topped our fence and is now almost 7 feet tall.
